Shelter Of Hope Academy

Shelter of hope Academy was started in the year 2005 by a Pastor with an aim of developing and improving the lives of orphans and vulnerable children and youths from poor slums.

Project Profile

They also wanted to rescue street children who have families but due to poverty they end up in the streets in search of food and survival, these children are guided and counseled then taken back to school and given basic education.

Currently, the school offer education from Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) to sixth grade. The school has a total number of 250 pupils where 135 are girls and 115 are boys. These pupils come from kiambiu slum and its neighboring areas. The school has a feeding program for these pupils and they are offered a balanced diet lunch every day since most of the pupils cannot afford to carry their own lunch from home. The school also actively participates in games and sports.

Volunteering activities

  • Teaching a combination of subjects i.e. Mathematics, English and science
  • Counseling sessions on issues relating to drug and substance abuse
  • Helping in supervision and marking of exams
  • Playing and organizing of games and sports with the neighboring schools

Accomodation and Sites of Interest

The volunteers will be accommodated in Bururburu closer to CIVS office at a host family. Breakfast and dinner will be provided at the host family while lunch will be served at the project. There are pit latrines, bath shelters and a kitchen at the project available for use by the volunteers.
