Mara Osero Conservation Project

Mara Osero Project situated on the western part of Mara North Conservancy is a wildlife conservation project and also a campsite people visiting the great Maasai Mara Park. The project was established in 2015 with the main mission of providing a sustainable correlation between human beings and wildlife. The project exists to conserve wildlife, preserve culture, minimize human-wildlife conflict, and engage in climate control practices.

Project Profile

Mara Osero is a project situated in the western part of Mara North Conservancy. It is located within the Maasai community which is a unique and popular tribe due to their long preserved culture of their traditional way of life, making them a symbol of the Kenyan culture. The project was established in 2015 with the aim to assist in wildlife conservation, create a sustainable environment with access to water, food, and electricity in order to improve life within the Maasai bushes. The project also has established eco-lodge for hosting volunteers and tourists within the region and who are involved with wildlife conservation or viewing.
The project is designed for protecting the delicate ecosystem and bringing a little income to the local community, creating jobs, inspiring and educating the youth about smart gardening and nature conservation. Living in the bush surrounded by zebras, giraffes, antelopes, lions, hippos, and elephants, the volunteer will work in direct contact with nature and helping in available activities. Apart from normal volunteering in the project’s activities, volunteers will get to closely know the wildlife and the eco-system of Maasai Mara through excursions, nature walks, activities of the conservancy, bird watching, enjoying sunrises and sunsets. There are a conservation and education village center that will offer volunteers the opportunity to explore, learn and interact with the Maasai community and their culture, giving a platform to serve and also live like the Maasai people. Additionally, there are also social activities with the children in the village for promoting education and capacity building.


The project is located in Kimintet, Kilgoris District, Narok County of Kenya.

Volunteering activities

  • Conducting nature walks in the park to monitor the animal’s behavior
  • Assisting in the maintenance of beehives (agriculture) around the village
  • Environmental clean-up exercises involving the collection of plastics
  • General maintenance and improvement of the campsite that involves construction, painting, gardening, landscaping and
    Planting trees within the campsite and at school
  • Assisting in teaching basic language, games, and mathematics in a local school
  • Helping in daily life work like cleaning, cooking and shopping from the local market
  • Assisting in taking care of a few domestic animals within the center like dogs and chicken
  • Any kind of new ideas or initiatives to help the Maasai people to generate income like making beads for selling to visitors

Accommodation and food

The volunteer will be accommodated in one of the houses at the project where meals will be provided.
