Eady, a volunteer with CIVS Kenya shares her experience…
“Kenya was a whirlwind—an experience that blended meaningful volunteering with once-in-a-lifetime adventures. Traveling with The Mighty Roar and CIVS, my weeks were a vibrant mix of hospital life, wildlife encounters, and cultural exploration.
Weekdays in Scrubs
The weekdays were all about medicine and maternity. I spent my days in the hospital, witnessing and assisting with C-sections, learning first-hand how healthcare operates in a completely different setting. The pace was intense, the learning curve steep, but the reward was indescribable. I left each shift feeling humbled and grateful to be part of something so impactful.
Weekends of Adventure
When Friday came, it was time to swap scrubs for adventure gear. My weekends became a bucket list come to life:
* Masai Mara Safari: Watching four of the Big Five roam free against the backdrop of endless savannahs was surreal. Lions lounging in the sun, elephants ambling by—it was a dream etched into memory.
* Ngong Hills by Boda Boda: Perched on the back of a motorbike, we wound our way up to breathtaking views that stretched beyond the horizon.
* Matatu Rides and City Life: Nairobi’s vibrant energy shone through in its colorful matatu rides, spontaneous street parties, and evenings in luxury penthouse apartments that overlooked the city lights.
* Spa Retreats: After long days, there were moments of pure indulgence with massages, saunas, and steam rooms—a little slice of paradise.
Heartfelt Moments
Beyond the thrill of safaris and city life, it was the human and animal connections that touched me the most:
* 100 Cuddles: Playing with and being hugged by gorgeous school children left my heart full. Their smiles and curiosity were contagious.
* Sheldrick Wildlife Trust: Feeding orphaned elephants and hearing their rescue stories was both moving and inspiring.
* Everyday Surprises: From cows strolling through petrol stations to dancing with locals, Kenya was a country that never stopped surprising me.
This trip was more than volunteering; it was life-changing. It reminded me of why I love healthcare, travel, and connecting with people across the globe. Kenya gave me laughter, learning, and memories I’ll carry forever.”
